Andrew Enwerem, the state Police Public
Relations Officer, who made this known to newsmen said, the arrest
followed several complaints from motorists, who have been lamenting
police extortion due to the reintroduced stop and search operation in
the state.
“The command has received a number of
complaints from motorists that the stop and search operation had turned
to extortion centres. I must also confirm that the special team set up
by the Commissioner of Police to monitor what our men do on the road,
arrested some policemen for varying offences” he said.
The spokesman, who said the corrupt officers
are currently explaining themselves to the commissioner of police
special team, urged members of the public to promptly report any act of
extortion by the police to his office for immediate action.
“The rules governing stop and search
operations are very clear and any policeman who goes out to do what he
likes on the road is definitely on his own” he said.
