Police Arrest Personnel For Extortion in Imo State NEWS Officers of the Imo State Police Command on Wednesday, arrested one of its personnel for extorting money from motorists on the highway. Policemen On Check Point * Policemen On Check Point Andrew Enwerem, the state Police Public Relations Officer, who made this known to newsmen said, the arrest followed several complaints from motorists, who have been lamenting police extortion due to the reintroduced stop and search operation in the state. “The command has received a number of complaints from motorists that the stop and search operation had turned to extortion centres. I must also confirm that the special team set up by the Commissioner of Police to monitor what our men do on the road, arrested some policemen for varying offences” he said. The spokesman, who said the corrupt officers are currently explaining themselves to the commissioner of police special team, urged members of the public to promptly report any act of extortion by the police to his office for immediate action. “The rules governing stop and search operations are very clear and any policeman who goes out to do what he likes on the road is definitely on his own” he said. Some motorists, who spoke on condition of anonymity disclosed that the policemen on the roads were no longer interested in really checking the identities of the passengers or the goods being transported by the motorists. They further disclosed that some soldiers who stationed themselves close to Capitol Hotel, along Owerri-Okigwe road, have also had their fair share. It was also gathered that some policemen also extort money from motorists at the World Bank Housing Estate area in Owerri, while they (motorists) are avoiding the bad spots around Ideal Hotel roundabout.
