The Nigerian Ambassador to South Africa has said
that the country will not be evacuating its citizens from the country
yet despite the continued attacks against foreigners.
Acting High Commissioner to South Africa, Martin Cobham, added that it was too early to consider the option of evacuation.
Cobham also said that reports on social media are making the situation seem worse than it really is.
“I
will not want to subscribe to an immediate evacuation. We want to look
at this thing on three phases – the lower threat, middle threat and the
higher threat. We can only tell our people; for now, abide by the hosts
laws, avoid areas of imminent clashes and violence and work in concert
with local authorities to ensure that peace reign,” Cobham said.
“Some
of these photographs and videos were occurrences that happened in the
DRC or even Rwanda and they are now replicated to foment trouble,
linking it to xenophobia,” he said speaking on the social media reports.
South
African nationals have continued xenophobic attacks against foreigners
after blaming them for lack of employment and increased crime.
